Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Creature Comforts Animal Hospital!
Dear Clients of Creature Comforts Animal Hospital,
We hope this message finds you and your furry family members in good health. We want to bring your attention to a matter of utmost importance regarding the recent outbreak of canine influenza in our region.
There has been a significant increase in infectious respiratory diseases, and numerous confirmed cases of influenza have been reported. It's essential to note that the current strain in circulation is not the same as the one that tragically affected our local shelter last month.
Previously, Las Vegas has not had any significant number of confirmed influenza cases. When this virus hits a naive population, it spreads very rapidly by dog-to-dog contact. People and cats are not susceptible to the virus.
Canine influenza typically manifests with symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, and reduced appetite. However, not all dogs will exhibit these signs. The severity of the illness associated with canine influenza can vary, ranging from no visible symptoms to severe illness, including pneumonia, which can potentially be fatal. However, most dogs which contract influenza will respond to treatment. They do tend to be sicker than the typical kennel cough dog.
To protect your beloved canine companions, here are some proactive steps you can take:
- Limit Exposure: Avoid visits to dog parks and minimize your dog's contact with other dogs in public areas.
- Vaccination: Our veterinarians strongly recommend having your pet vaccinated against canine influenza if your dog has exposure to other dogs. Please note that the vaccine requires two doses to become effective. The first dose must be followed by a booster shot three weeks later. It's crucial to understand that the vaccine does not offer protection until after the booster has been administered. The influenza vaccine remains effective for up to two months after full vaccination.
If you plan to board your pet anywhere during the holiday season, vaccinate your pet now to ensure protection while boarding.
Does your pet need the influenza vaccine? If your pet engages in any of the following activities, we strongly advise considering vaccination:
- Regular visits to the groomer
- Participation in training classes or group sessions
- Frequent visits to dog parks
- Interaction with friends or family who also have dogs
- Exposure to other dogs in various settings
As we approach the holiday season, we encourage you to take this opportunity to vaccinate your pet and provide them with the protection they need.
Should your dog exhibit any of the aforementioned symptoms—such as coughing, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, or reduced appetite—please don't hesitate to contact us immediately. We are here to provide the necessary care and support for your pet's well-being.
