Trupanion Pet Insurance

Trupanion Pet InsuranceAt Creature Comforts, we strongly believe in pet insurance. Advances in veterinary medicine have allowed us to provide excellent medical care to our patients, but sometimes the cost can be staggering. Insurance is not designed to help with the routine preventative care (like our wellness plans do). It is designed to enable you to provide top-notch care in the event your pet has an accident or suffers a short or long term illness.

We know the costs associated with quality care can add up very quickly, and we want you to be able to provide the care you feel is appropriate without concern. To that end, we have partnered with Trupanion so that you do not have to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement like most insurance plans. Instead, Trupanion will pay your bill directly. It can also be used at any veterinary hospital, anywhere in the country, so your pet will never be left unprotected. Several of our staff and veterinarians have insured our own pets with Trupanion, including Dr. Gorman.

When Trupanion first came to the market in Nevada, the company seemed too good to be true. Believing that before recommending something, she should have firsthand experience, Dr. Gorman signed up Tally, her Saint Bernard. All of her large breed dogs had required orthopedic surgery at some point, so she figured she’d get the opportunity to test the insurance product – she just didn’t realize how much.

It was discovered at the time of her spay that Tally had severe hip dysplasia and she needed surgery to try to correct the problem. After surgery, being the stubborn soul she was, she tried to stand up in her cage and fell, breaking the plate that was holding her pelvis together. She needed to be hospitalized and sedated for 3 weeks to give the pelvis a chance to heal without her trying to stand. Given the extreme complications, Dr. Gorman assumed she would get a lot of hassle from Trupanion as she had witnessed clients experience over the years with other insurance companies. To the contrary, not only did Trupanion give no grief about paying their 90% of Tally’s bill, but they also paid for her to remain sedated and hospitalized for the second hip so the same thing would not happen again.

After the first year, Dr. Gorman thought about canceling her insurance, however, just a week after the policy renewal, Tally started developing severe environmental allergies. She was allergic to absolutely everything! Dr. Gorman started her on weekly allergy injections which, due to the severity, required 3 separate bottles of injections weekly. Antigens are not cheap, but Trupanion had her covered. It certainly made Tally’s life much more comfortable to be able to receive this treatment. Trupanion also helped cover the cost of her prescription diet food and medicine to help keep her from being sore from the hip that did not heal.

Then, tragedy struck the Gorman household. When Tally was just 4 years old, she collapsed, unable to get back up. She was rushed to the clinic where it was discovered that her bladder was overfilled and she was unable to urinate. Radiographs and ultrasound images revealed no specific cause. She was transferred to the specialty center for 24 hour care and diagnosis. A CT scan revealed a tumor in her pelvis. After undergoing surgery through which the surgeon was able to remove 95% of the tumor, Tally still could not urinate. Stents were placed to help open her urethra.

The Gorman family was devastated, especially Dr. Gorman’s son, who was extremely attached to Tally. Although they did everything they could, ultimately they were unable to save Tally. They were, however, able to make every decision for her based solely on whether they thought it would give her quality of life for longer and if it was fair to put her through it. Never did they have to base their decision on cost. It cost somewhere in the vicinity of $20,000.00 to try and save Tally, and Trupanion paid their portion of the bill without issue. Tally was a special soul that will always be missed. It has taken the Gormans four new puppies to fill the void she left, all whom have their own Trupanion policy.

Penny loves the care she gets at Creature Comforts! Being spayed wasn't fun, but you made up for it with the little bear you gave her! She's so happy! Love the little "extras" she gets... treats, cuddles & now a post-surgery toy!

Dr. Paul is my favorite! She performed two surgeries on me, saw me at minimum of once a month during my puppy years (hey, it doesn't have to edible for me to consume it) and was very compassionate and concerned with pain management.

Dr. Paul understood my breed (min-pin) and explained in depth how my personality is a factor in my unhealthy habits (like eating princess rings, rubber bands, whoopee cushions). She made sure, in spite of my tenacious breed that I was able to "just rest."

She has always gone above and beyond explaining the options available and making sure the best possible solution was opted for, both cost effectively and health wise.

Clean and friendly clinic. The doctors and staff are funny and friendly. Usually no problem getting an appointment on the same day. I like the fact that this is almost an all female staff (doctors that is) it seems to put my critters more at ease when they have to go. Some of the doctors see more than just dogs and cats, they see all kinds of critters! I have dogs and parrots and it's good to know that they are in good hands. Over all, I pretty much love the place!

I would not consider taking my fur babies any where else but Creature Comforts Animal Hospital. The doctors and staff are sensitive, caring, and qualified people who love animals and are attentive to all of my concerns.
