Pampering a Senior Dog
June 15, 2019
As your dog ages, you’ll see some changes in both his appearance and his behavior. Fido may go grey around the muzzle, and may spend more time napping and less time charging after the cat. At this special time in your canine friend’s life, you’ll want to focus more on keeping him healthy and comfortable, and less on entertaining him. A Centennial Hills, NV vet discusses pampering a senior dog in this article.

A comfy bed is a definite must for older pooches. Many dogs get stiff and sore in their golden years, which can make it hard for them to get comfortable. Orthopedic beds are a great choice here.

Obesity is a fairly common issue in senior dogs. As Fido ages, he won’t be as active as he once was, which means he won’t burn as many calories. Pay close attention to your canine buddy’s portion sizes, and don’t go overboard with treats.

Fido may benefit from certain supplements as he ages. For instance, fish oil can help lubricate stiff joints, while glucosamine can help repair cartilage. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Pet Ramps

Senior dogs sometimes have trouble climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars, or jumping onto beds and couches. Consider getting pet ramps or stairs for Fido.

Paw Care

Overgrown nails may not sound like a huge problem, but they can actually be very painful. If Fido’s nails are too long, he may adjust his gait to compensate for the discomfort. This puts a lot of stress on his bone and joints, which can exacerbate other issues, such as arthritis. Keep those claws clipped!

Elevated Dishes

Raised dishes are easier for Fido to eat from than bowls on the floor. Consider giving your furry buddy’s dinnerware a ‘pupgrade’!

Custom Care

Just like people, dogs sometimes experience hearing or vision loss in their old age. Keep your canine pal’s specific challenges in mind. For instance, if Fido is losing his sight, keep nightlights on for him, and set out runners to help him get around.

Love is the magic ingredient in any pet care routine. Spend lots of time with Fido, and make sure he feels loved. The time we have to spend with our furry best friends often passes much too quickly! Please contact us, your Centennial Hills, NV vet clinic, anytime. We’re happy to help!
