Does Your Dog Have Allergies?

Did you know dogs can have allergies? Just like us, our canine friends can suffer from allergic reactions, and they can make poor Fido quite miserable! Our furry friends can develop allergies at any age, and to many different things. Below, a NW Las Vegas, NV vet discusses canine allergies, and how to help your dog beat them.

Symptoms of Allergies

Itchiness is one of the main symptoms of allergies in our canine friends. Fido may nibble or lick his paws, sides, or the base of his tail. You might also see signs of skin irritation, such as crusty, flaky, or red skin. Some dogs get red or runny eyes when they are suffering from allergies, while others may sneeze, snore, or wheeze. Recurring ear infections are another possible symptom of allergies, as are vomiting and diarrhea. Occasionally, dogs will have an extreme reaction to something. This is very dangerous, and can cause Fido to go into shock or fall into a coma, and can even be fatal. Contact your vet immediately if your dog shows any sign of an allergic reaction.

Common Allergens

Dogs can become allergic to many of the same things as people can. Dust, mold, and pollen are common allergens. Flea bites, food ingredients, and even specific substances, like rubber, shampoo ingredients, or certain fabrics, can all cause our canine buddies to react. Strong fumes, such as cigarette smoke or perfume, could also be the culprit. Fido might even be allergic to his doggy shampoo!

What To Do

Your vet will need to pinpoint what is making your canine pal react, so Fido may need some tests, such as blood tests. In the case of food allergies, it can be trickier to narrow down what your pup is reacting to, so your vet may recommend a special diet. Once your vet has determined what your pup is allergic to, he or she will then be able to recommend specific treatment options. The exact treatment needed will depend on the type and severity of your dog’s reactions, so this is always done on a case-by-case basis.

Do you have any questions about your dog’s health, care, or behavior? Do you think your furry pal may have allergies? Please feel free to contact us, your NW Las Vegas, NV veterinary clinic, for all your dog’s veterinary care needs. We are happy to help!
